Linen in the Home

May 21, 2026

Linen is full of character. In its natural washed or tumbled state the lack of elasticity in the flax fibres leave it crumped and relaxed. This informal look lends itself beautifully to a warm and homely environment. What could be more inviting and restful than a bed piled high with crisp yet soft linens?

When looking at linen as a fabric choice for the home it’s hard to find any downsides. It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but boasts numerous wonderful attributes from the perspective of both practicality and sustainability.

A STRONG FIBRE

Linen is manufactured from flax, a strong plant best grown in northern Europe. It needs little to no fertilizer and, due to the local climate, little extra water. Flax is hardy and can be grown in poor quality soil without pesticides. The Advisory Commission Report to the European Parliament stated that flax cultivation has positive effects on eco-system diversity as it allows for an “environmental pause”.

One hectare of flax can retain 3.7 tonnes of CO2. Every part of the plant is used. What isn’t used to produce linen is turned into linseed oil, paper, cattle feed or even soap.  Linen  is completely biodegradable, recyclable and, due to its natural absorbency, requires less dye than cotton.

Just like the growing flax in its raw state, linen cloth is strong and hardy in the home.

It’s great for upholstery, cushions and curtains. Linen itself is naturally stain resistant, does not pill and is  moth repellent. It’s easy to wash and can sustain high temperatures with very little shrinkage if at all. It is breathable and so perfect for bedding and towels. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, hypo-allergenic and thermoregulating. It will absorb up 20% moisture before feeling damp.

The story of linen is a positive one that finds a happy ending in the home. This hard-working and sustainable fibre brings with it a good energy and clear conscience that can be draped happily around your home.
