Renovating The Grove

Apr 03, 2026

In 2021 we bought an old Victorian house around the corner from our shop in Rye. The idea was to renovate and decorate the six bedroom property to accommodate students coming for our sell-out residential retreats. It was a long journey to restore the house to its former glory. It had gone through several modifications, including one lifetime as a Bed & Breakfast and another housing four families divided into flats.

The house was built in 1893 as both the headmaster’s accommodation for Rye Grammar School and to house some of the boarders. In this way, the groundwork had already been laid for its future as an intrinsic part of our sewing school. The Grove was ready for the students to return.

A HANDMADE INTERIOR

We restored, repaired and redesigned the house to be a delightful and inspiring space for our guests. Large social areas sit comfortably alongside snug, serene spaces for creative meditation.

We built all the schemes around the Merchant & Mills fabric collection and designed patterns for soft furnishings. It's these designs that eventually gave life to the pieces you'll find today in HOUSE.

EXPLORE THE COLLECTION

It was important to make the house a home, so a family of objects, artworks and textiles occupy the rooms; the work of local artists rubbing shoulders with antique pieces that we have collected over the years.

Many of these were bought as Merchant & Mills inspiration: Japanese boro, Chinese embroidery, African and Indian applique or traditional patchwork.

It’s impossible to say what the intention was or where they fit in, but they are in themselves beautiful works and serve to remind us of the uniqueness of textiles, both in history and culture.
